Frenji Jrs. hang tuff at CYP

NYCHoops.net Frenji Jr. vs. New York Blaze by Stacey Davis

This match-up came down to experience versus inexperience. Frenji Jr.,comprised of an all sophomore class, came out to prove that they could run with the big boys. NY Blaze, a mix of seniors and junior class men, showed up.

Frenji Jr. relied on the Rye Country HS duo, Tyler Fernandez (18pts) and Matt Staubi (17pts), to keep them in them game. By the end of the half the game was not even close with Frenji Jr losing by 15 points. NY Blaze senior, Antwan Boyd (20pts), scored a point at the line to close the half making the score 43-28.

The NY Blaze lived up to their name and lit up the young sophomore squad throughout the third quarter. Frenji Jr. only came within sixteen points and by the end of third quarter the score was 71-55.

In the fourth, with three and half minutes left, the NY Blaze were up 74-61. This was the closest the young squad came in this quarter. Super sophomore, 6’10’ Chima Azuonu dunked two in for the Frenji Jr. but Blaze schooled the young team and sent them home packing; Tremaine Fraiser (14pts) scored the last bucket to close out the quarter making the final, 85-72.

2012 CYP schedule

The 66th annual CYP tournament and fourth annual William Gallagher Memorial tournament will begin Thursday night at Our Lady of Mercy in Port Chester. The tournament is the unofficial kick-off event for AAU basketball in the area and is a showcase for some of the tri-state area’s top high school and prep basketball talent.

The defending champion is Team Frenji, which has won three of the last five CYP titles. Last year’s tournament MVP was Moe Harkless, who went on to win Big East Rookie of the Year as a freshman at St. John’s. The Queens native recently declared for this year’s NBA Draft.

Recent stars who have shined on the CYP stage are last year’s No. 1 pick Kyrie Irving, Cincy/White Plains swingman Sean Kilpatrick and Louisville guard Russ Smith, not to mention a host of former Section 1 “Mr. Basketball” winners like Kevin Jones and Jabarie Hinds.

Mount Vernon’s senior trio of Isaiah CousinsRandy Stephens and Jarrel Marshall won’t play in the early rounds of the tournament, but don’t be surprised if they surface in Monday’s semifinals after their high school season has ended. Hinds did exactly that and played in last year’s championship for Team Frenji, although he was clearly gassed from the Federation championship.

Other local stars like Tuckahoe’s Sky Williams, Peekskill’s Chandler Pierce and Stepinac’s Josh Jamesare expected to play, as well as Mount St. Michael’s three senior stars – Malik GillAnthony Maestreand Omari Manhertz – and Rockland’s top seniors.

Below is a look at the schedule. Last year’s four semifinalists (Team Frenji, NY Falcons, Rodney Abrams, Panthers) earned byes into the quarterfinals. The schedule is followed by a glossary of sorts that outlines where each team is expected to pool its players from.

Lastly, consider yesterday’s blog post null and void. Tournament organizer Joe Bellofato has committed to a new team in Thursday’s 7:15 time slow: Frenji. The team will consist of the organization’s younger players. It will replace the Gauchos, who withdrew from the tournament after more than three decades as a staple in the event.
