On Tuesday Night 9/28 at Manhattan College several FRENJI players attend the HOOP GROUP JR. ELITE Camp for 6th to 9th graders. The guys were able to get great competition and skills development from some of the areas best coaches and staff. Some of our players that attended were 6’0 JALEEL BARR (8th grade), 5’6 KYLAN GUERRA (8th grade), JARED JONES (6th grade), Ciaran Bennett & Jordan Riullano. We spoke with the Director Chad Babel today and he stated that all our guys are promising young players and worked extremely hard. SHOCKER!! Great job guys. The older players got out tonight to Manhattan College for the NY Top 100 Elite Camp 10th-12th graders. Check back for updates.
TEAM FRENJI Alumni HASSAN WHITESIDE checked in again with prior to his first professional Media Day with the Sacramento Kings. Hassan says things are going great and he has bulked up 25lbs since being drafted in June. He anticipates a great training camp and helping the Kings go far in the playoffs this year. Here is a Media Day picture of Hassan this week. Check back for more info. Also attached is a sactownroylaty.com review of the day. “Hassan Whiteside has gone from stringbean to the Incredible Hulk. He said he’s gained 25(!) pounds since Summer League, just by eating everything he can and lifting a lot of weights, and it really shows in a good way. Its good too, because he knows he still has a lot of work to do, as once again his answer on what he needed to improve on was “everything”. Hassan looks and acts like a big kid, so I can see where some question his maturity, but I think its a good thing, and believe he’ll quickly become a fan favorite. He’s showing he’s a hard worker (he’s been working all offseason on his game, especially with Shareef Abdur-Rahim) and he wears the #33 as reminder of where he was drafted and how he’ll prove the doubters wrong. I see a bright future ahead for Hassan. It also looks like he’s getting along with all his new teammates and he mentioned how he loves Sacramento, especially the weather.”
TEAM FRENJI Alumni and current FRENJI Elite Team player 6’10 BERNARD WEBB signed earlier this spring with Robert Morris. We congratulate B WEBB on getting to where he belongs among the D1 ranks. Here is the story:
Bernard Webb of Bridgeport has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa.Webb, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward has three years of eligibility remaining. He attended Barton Junior College in Great Bend, Kansas, for two years, but took a non-medical redshirt in 2009-10. As a freshman in 2008-09, Webb averaged 6.7 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Webb, 21, attended Central High School but never played for the Hilltoppers. He eventually landed at Genesis One prep school in Mendenhall, Miss., and originally committed to Manhattan.
“Bernard adds both size and strength to our roster,” RMU coach Andrew Toole said in a statement. “He is extremely effective with his back to the basket, and he’s able to both rebound and block shots. He’s more mature physically having played at the junior college level, which should allow him to acclimate himself very quickly to Division I basketball. I expect him to compete for minutes right away.”
Marist, Auburn, Manhattan and Southern Mississippi were among the other schools that showed interest in Webb.
TEAM FRENJI Alumni 6’5 SHERROD WRIGHT of Mt Vernon HS is out for the year. Here is the story: TMB learned today from multiple sources close to the program that Sherrod Wright will sit out the 2010-11 season due to an injured shoulder. Wright averaged 5.5 points per game last season and was a major contributor to the team by the end of last season. Wright recently had an MRI on the injured shoulder that forced him to sit out the exhibition games in Italy. Wright will redshirt the season and retain the year of eligibility.
Team Frenji wishes S-Rod a speedy recovery this year and the best of luck in the future season at GM. We will keep you updated on his return.
Team Frenji Alumni and current Sacramento Kings Rookie center 7’0 HASSAN WHITESIDE checked in last week from California. Hassan told us that he’s gained 20lbs and has been working out with one on one and learning from veteran Center Sam Dalambert. Hassan recently visited the Boost Mobile Elite Top 24 in Venice Beach. Hassan told us the he plans to visit NY soon to catch up with us. He also told us he would be checking in with us to update his season progress.
