Behind the hot shooting of Matt Staubi (pictured right) and Darren Douglas, Rye Country Day just beat King 69-52 at home to advance to tomorrow’s Fairchester Athletic Association championship. The Wildcats (17-7) will play at No. 1 Hamden Hall at 6 p.m.
on Saturday. This is their first appearance in the FAA final since they lost to Masters in 2009.
Rye Country Day also found out prior to the game that it earned the No. 1 seed in the NYSAIS Class C state tournament, which begins next week. The Wildcats won the title two seasons ago but were not eligible to compete in the 2011 tournament because they had a post-graduate on the roster.
In tonight’s win over King, Staubi had 17 of his 21 points in the first half to help build a 39-26 halftime lead. Douglas then added eight of his 13 points in the second half, including back to back 3’s.
Alex Gendelman returned after missing a week. He had suffered a cut on his foot that required five stitches. The senior contributed immediately, hitting a 3 off the opening tip. He finished with 10 points.
